Several incidents of violence stemming from disputes over property ownership have been reported in Kenya recently.

In Kirinyaga, a 35-year-old man, George Muriithi, allegedly stabbed his 65-year-old father more than 10 times, resulting in his death. He then went into hiding. However, he was arrested in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua county, following a police search. Muriithi reportedly had a history of using hard drugs, which residents believe could have affected his judgement. Similarly, in Kisii county, a 61-year-old man allegedly killed his 31-year-old son following an unknown dispute. He surrendered to the police on 9 January and is under investigation.

Another case has been reported in Kirinyaga, where a 30-year-old man, whose name has not been released, allegedly stabbed his father to death following a dispute. He had been on the run since the incident but was later apprehended by detectives. According to witnesses, the deceased picked a fight with his son for unknown reasons, leading to a bitter exchange of words. The suspect took a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed his father in the chest and stomach, killing him instantly.

These incidents highlight the rising cases of violence related to family disputes over property ownership in the country. Kenya has seen a steady increase in property disputes, often leading to fatal outcomes. Most of the cases involve the younger generation, who believe they have a right to inherit the property. However, the older generation often disagrees, leading to violent confrontations. The authorities need to create more awareness on peaceful conflict resolution to curb such incidents.
