Mama Ida Odinga urges expectant mothers in Homa Bay to name children after her and Raila Odinga
Mama Ida Odinga, wife of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, has urged expectant mothers in Homa Bay to name their children after her and her husband as a way of keeping her family’s legacy alive.
Speaking during the launch of the Homa Bay County Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, Mama Ida called on women in the county to monitor their pregnancies and to name their children Ida and Raila.
Mama Ida explained that by naming children after the Odinga family, the community would be upholding the ODM leader’s legacy.
She also encouraged expectant mothers to ensure a safe delivery for their children. Mama Ida’s call to name children after the Odinga family was met with mixed reactions, with some expressing support while others opposed the idea.
In addition to her call for children to be named after her family, Mama Ida accused some politicians from the Nyanza region of betraying the Odinga family. During a thanksgiving prayer service organised by Homa Bay County Woman Representative Joyce Osogo, Mama Ida alleged that these politicians were trying to bring down the Odinga family. She lashed out at them, saying that they had frequented her home and offices in the past but were now out to attack her family.
The event also saw Mama Ida giving a stipend to pregnant women who attended the launch. She called on the community members to monitor the expectant mothers and ensure that they deliver safely.
Mama Ida’s call to name children after her family comes at a time when the country is grappling with issues of sexual and gender-based violence, which the newly launched policy aims to address. The policy seeks to provide a framework for addressing these issues and to promote gender equality.
Overall, Mama Ida’s call to name children after her family is likely to continue to generate debate among residents of Homa Bay and beyond. However, her message of ensuring safe deliveries for expectant mothers and promoting gender equality through the new policy is a positive step towards creating a safer and more equal society.
