freelance writer based in London, UK

The new digital number plates are finally here, and all Kenyan motorists are now required to get the plates for their cars and motorcycles from NTSA within the next 18 months at KES 3000.

Failure to do so will attract a fine of KES 20,000. Imagine paying KES 9,000 for your three cars. Not forgetting that Super petrol is up by KES 20.18 a litre after the EPRA scrapped the fuel subsidy . Now imagine paying KES 60,000 in fines.

Application will be opened from 1st October 2022.
Why the new plates you ask?

The new generation number plates come fitted with the following:
· a QR Code,
· a hologram – hold up! Like in the movies?

It is also embedded with a tracking device, a RFID microchip which transfers information between it and security agencies or at traffic lights. No more skipping lights at the roundabouts. Kenya’s equivalent of Uncle Sam is watching!
