Devastation Strikes Twice: Deadly 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turkey's Hatay Province, Sparking Fear of Tsunami and Aftershocks

Turkey’s southern province of Hatay has been hit by another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 6.4, just two weeks after the twin earthquakes which left the region devastated.

Rescue workers are currently attempting to find people trapped under rubble, and people in Hatay province have been urged to stay away from the coast over a possible tsunami.

Three people have been confirmed dead and 213 others injured by the latest quake. State-run Anadolu news agency said the tremors were felt in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. More than 6,200 aftershocks have been recorded since the 7.8-magnitude hit Turkey and Syria, leaving millions homeless.

Turkey’s disaster management agency has recorded two more tremors of 5.2 magnitude around 20 minutes after the first on Monday. Officials had urged people to stay away from the coast, but Vice President Fuat Oktay said the warning had been lifted as the risk of a tsunami had passed.

The latest quakes have brought fresh panic to the region, and many fear that if aftershocks continue, more buildings could be brought down, threatening innocent lives.
