The aftermath of Nigeria’s February 25 presidential election has been marked by controversy and accusations of electoral fraud. Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner, but opposition leader Atiku Abubakar, who came in second, and Peter Obi, who came in third, have both rejected the results and claimed victory.
On Monday, Abubakar and his supporters took to the streets to contest the election results, dressed in black and carrying banners reading “Save our democracy” and “INEC is corrupt”. They marched to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s headquarters in Abuja to submit a petition claiming electoral fraud and accusing INEC of aiding and abetting vote-rigging.
The PDP chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, accused INEC of “direct involvement in aiding and abetting the monumental rigging and manipulation of the election results in favour of the ruling party”. INEC has acknowledged technical difficulties on the day of the vote, but denies any wrongdoing.
The election, which saw almost 25 million people cast ballots, was marred by long delays and technical glitches, which some voters and opposition parties claim allowed for ballot manipulation and disparities between the manual and online results. Problems with the new biometric voter identification system also caused huge delays and queues, leading to low turnout.
INEC has vowed to address the concerns raised by parties and voters before key governorship and local assembly elections on Saturday. The outcome of these elections could further exacerbate the political tension in Nigeria if the opposition parties do not accept the results.
