16-Year-Old Kenyan Student Dies After Alleged Beating by Teachers for Cheating
A Kenyan Form One student, Kevin Kiptanui, has died at the age of 16 after being allegedly caned by two teachers at his new school in Chemase Secondary School, Tinderet sub-county.
He had reportedly been caught copying answers during a Physics test and was subsequently punished with strokes of the cane. Kiptanui collapsed shortly after the beating and began vomiting blood. He was rushed to Chepsese dispensary, where he was found to have suffered serious internal injuries. He was referred to Nandi Hills Level Four Hospital, where he passed away two days later.
Kiptanui’s mother recounted that he had alleged that the teachers who caned him had also kicked him in the stomach. Before his passing, he spoke with a lot of difficulty.
The police have launched an investigation into his death and are probing the circumstances surrounding the incident. The school’s management has reported the death to the Ministry of Education, but has yet to officially report the matter to the police. The school principal declined to comment on the incident.
Many are puzzled by the incident, and angry parents from Chemase are demanding justice. Nandi County Commissioner Herman Shiambi condemned the incident, stating that no human being should die over a petty issue such as cheating in a quiz. He questioned why the student was caned when corporal punishment had been banned by the Kenyan government. Kiptanui’s body is currently lying at Nandi Hill mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. The school has been closed indefinitely.
